Does the thought of spending an entire day decluttering your bedroom fill you with joy? Probably not – but it needn’t fill you with despair, either. The truth is, decluttering your bedroom can be satisfying, rewarding, and yes, it can even be fun, if you follow this simple three step plan!

1. Set Aside A Declutter Day

Rome may not have been built in a day, but your bedroom can be made clutter free in a day, no matter how messy you’ve allowed it to become. If you start early enough, it’ll be decluttered in less than a day, and then you can do something more interesting in the evening.

The trick is to plan everything in advance. Before you do anything, you need to take a good look at what you’re faced with. Get a notebook and make some notes. Write down all the clutter hotspots, from the closet to the dresser to the nightstand. Don’t forget to look under the bed!

Once you’ve identified the places in your bedroom where clutter tends to congregate, write down some possible solutions. This is the fun part, as you get to be creative. For example, if your closet is stuffed to bursting point, how about using the backs of the closet doors as hanging space? How about turning that space under your bed into a storage area, using wheeled drawer units?

As soon as you have your action plan, choose a day when you can devote proper time and attention to it. Circle that day on your calendar in bright red pen and write “Declutter Day” on it. Go out and buy anything you need in advance, and get plenty of sleep the night before. Set the alarm early.

2. Use A Declutter Day System

Your bedroom declutter day will be much more enjoyable and fun if you use a system. Start at the bedroom door and work your way around the room in a clockwise direction. First of all, get a laundry bin or similar receptacle and scoop everything into it that doesn’t belong in your bedroom – books, clothes, kids’ toys or whatever it may be. Take those things back to where they do belong and put them away. This will give your bedroom an instant declutter.

I’ve been asked this often, when I’ve written blog posts about posture, and muscle stretching and flexibility. Years ago I recommended sitting on physio balls at work. I did so because on a gym ball, there is no pressure going up your spine, causing your muscles to cramp.

On a gym ball, you can bounce while you’re reading or waiting. You can increase circulation and burn some calories.

Yet, you’re still sitting. And many offices won’t let you bring in a ball.

Eventually, along came sit or stand desks.

And more – no matter how much you monitor your posture, and try not to slouch, merely by your professional focus, you will gradually slouch.

This tightens up your pectoral muscles, and by reaction, the muscles between your shoulder blades will tighten up in an effort to pull you straight.

Inevitably, your neck muscles shorten, as your head cannot sit in a relaxed way above your upper back. It tips forward a bit, and the back of your neck starts to cramp in an effort to pull your chin up.

Your body will always instinctively try to balance itself. This natural effort leads to muscle spasms, bad habits of tension, and pain. Obliviously, you train it this way.

Standing up is most likely to keep you aware of your nuances in posture. With correct desk height and keyboard placement, you will maintain better positions.

In some situations, standing may cause lower back pain.

If an individual is generally out of shape, with tense and shortened muscles, they may feel this immediately. Others can stand for about an hour before the low back pain starts.

In most cases, the pain will dissipate in a few minutes after sitting down.

Women, more than men, in one study, tolerated standing longer. This may be because men have naturally tighter hip muscles than women.

Hip muscles will affect the low back muscles, pulling on them, and causing them to pull back – attempting a natural balance.

For both men and women, using a step stool, and alternating feet resting on it, will relax the low back.

Of course, if you have chronic or severe back pain, see a doctor or chiropractor and find out the cause. You may just need to add some exercise and stretching to your weekly routines.

  • A soft or memory foam type of insole/half a size larger shoes
  • Round toes or wider shoes, so your feet can spread under your weight comfortably
  • A floor mat to absorb the pressure of your weight on a hard floor

After going through several power outages recently, and seeing the local hardware stores run out of generators in the early morning, it seems prudent to plan for the next calamity brought on by irresponsible power providers.

 

The increasingly bad weather is a big part of this.

 

The 19th Century model power grid, that needs to be completely redesigned, is a big part of this. For instance, I recently read about a huge solar farm planned for the Cantil California area. It will supply solar power to about 150,00 homes in the Los Angeles area. 

 

This plan is per the 19th Century model – the idea of transferring that power to another area. It’s antiquated. Why not just put that solar array onto the houses it is going to power? Keep it local.

 

Then weather, earthquakes, et al, in another area won’t shut that power down. And, give those same homes a powerful generator too.

 

A previous City of Los Angeles study had shown that only two houses per city block needed solar power, to fuel the entire block. A plan was in place to move forward, starting by giving senior home owners the solar arrays.

 

It just disappeared somehow. 

Why Is California Shutting Off Power?

 

There is an angry ongoing discussion in this state, in the capitol, counties, cities and small towns.

 

Shutting off power to prevent wildfires of enormous destruction sounds sensible until you think about it.

 

And that comes to another very important question.

 

Should power companies be owned by the tax payers – customers? Or should they be corporations that serve their share holders first, and the infrastructure of their delivery system last?

 

Why shouldn’t profits go first to the reliability and safety of the equipment? How is it legal for for this to be neglected?

 

This issue will be reviewed, hopefully, ongoing.

 

Yet, already I hear good PR ads by PG&E on the radio. I never heard those before the massive transformer-sparked fires of recent months.

 

This makes that company look more irresponsible than ever. We don’t want to hear that, right?

 

We want to think that the company is out there fixing the weak spots, replacing old equipment. Just get on with it!

 

Don’t blah blah on the radio about how much you care!

 

Since no political solution comes quickly, we need to think about how to protect our homes and property from the huge losses of a power outage.
