Fans work in a manner, where they push and move air, rather than change the actual temperature of that air. They function because of the scientific concept known as convection. Convection is simply the idea that as a gas is heated, it will rise and as it cools, will sink. The way the fans work is that each of the paddles on the fan are slanted in such a way that, based on which way the fan is rotating, it will either push air down or pull air up. The manipulation of convection in fans can best be seen in winter use rather than as in winter the warm air will naturally rise as the cold air tends to stay low by law of physics. Setting the fan to pull air up will cause the cold air to be pulled up and force the warm air to fall and that way will keep the people below well heated without forcing any of that warm air back up thus making it lose it’s heat. In the hot summer days the air will naturally rise due to the heat so outdoor fans should be set in order keep pushing the air down, even though the air is hot it will cool as it moves. It will also create that certain breeze of air, we all savor and hope for during those heatwaves brought on by summer droughts.

Though the threat of complete air conditioning take over is continuously looming, fans still continue to provide us with both a solid alternative and supplement for climate control. Over two centuries have passed since the advent of this wonderful contraption and it is still a common object to see in residential areas. They not only provide a certain decor to a room, but as I outlined above, can provide climate help in both the dead cold of winter and the torturous heat of summer days. Even to this day we see many innovations and improvements to fans such as smaller, more efficient motors and the use of variable speed controls. “The Lost Wax Casting Of Bronze by Alan Beggerow

The traditional process used to cast bronze, developed and used 4,000 years ago, is called lost wax casting. This method results in highly detailed, quality castings and has changed very little over the centuries. The method was used by craftsmen and artists from every culture from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt up to today.

This process begins with the object that is to be cast. An artist creates a sculpture from clay or wax as these substances remain soft. These sculptures can be very intricate and finely detailed. A mold is then made of the sculpture, usually in two pieces, sometimes more when a sculpture is very large. Plaster is used on small pieces, but fiberglass is also used, especially for larger sculptures. After the molding material has been applied and it has dried thoroughly, the mold is then opened and the original sculpture is removed. Usually the original is destroyed in this process, as the molding material is very rigid. That is why the original sculpture is made of a soft material so that it can be removed from the mold.

After all of the original sculpture has been removed and the mold cleaned, a thin coating of wax is brushed onto the inside of the mold. This is done to capture every intricate detail of the mold. The mold is then put together, and wax is poured in the mold while it is being slowly rotated. After a layer of wax at least three quarters of an inch forms on the inside of the mold, the rest of the wax is dumped out. When the wax has thoroughly hardened, the mold is removed. The wax cast is then worked on by artisans to ensure that it is as perfect as possible.

The wax casts are then dipped into a mixture of plaster and sand. This is repeated many times. Each dipping has to dry thoroughly before the next. With each successive dip, the sand and plaster mixture gets more coarse. This results in a very strong shell being built up over the wax cast. After these shells have hardened, vents and ‘runners’ are added to allow the molten bronze to enter the shell, and for gases and excess metal to escape. The shells are then placed into a kiln and baked at very high temperatures. This heat causes the wax inside of the shell to melt away, leaving an exact image of the sculpture in the shell. This gives the process its name of ‘lost wax casting’. After baking, the shell is now a mold ready for molten bronze.

Once the bronze has been poured and has cooled, the shell is then carefully chipped away, leaving a cast of the original sculpture in bronze. Any flaws are removed, the sculpture can be buffed and left its natural bronze color, or painted. This process is very labor intensive and expensive, but it results in such fine quality castings that it is still used after 4000 years.”

After going through several power outages recently, and seeing the local hardware stores run out of generators in the early morning, it seems prudent to plan for the next calamity brought on by irresponsible power providers.

The increasingly bad weather is a big part of this.

The 19th Century model power grid, that needs to be completely redesigned, is a big part of this. For instance, I recently read about a huge solar farm planned for the Cantil California area. It will supply solar power to about 150,00 homes in the Los Angeles area.

This plan is per the 19th Century model – the idea of transferring that power to another area. It’s antiquated. Why not just put that solar array onto the houses it is going to power? Keep it local.

Then weather, earthquakes, et al, in another area won’t shut that power down. And, give those same homes a powerful generator too.

A previous City of Los Angeles study had shown that only two houses per city block needed solar power, to fuel the entire block. A plan was in place to move forward, starting by giving senior home owners the solar arrays.

It just disappeared somehow.

Why Is California Shutting Off Power?

There is an angry ongoing discussion in this state, in the capitol, counties, cities and small towns.

Shutting off power to prevent wildfires of enormous destruction sounds sensible until you think about it.

And that comes to another very important question.

Should power companies be owned by the tax payers – customers? Or should they be corporations that serve their share holders first, and the infrastructure of their delivery system last?

Why shouldn’t profits go first to the reliability and safety of the equipment? How is it legal for for this to be neglected?

This issue will be reviewed, hopefully, ongoing.

Yet, already I hear good PR ads by PG&E on the radio. I never heard those before the massive transformer-sparked fires of recent months.

This makes that company look more irresponsible than ever. We don’t want to hear that, right?

We want to think that the company is out there fixing the weak spots, replacing old equipment. Just get on with it!

Don’t blah blah on the radio about how much you care!

Since no political solution comes quickly, we need to think about how to protect our homes and property from the huge losses of a power outage.

For instance, all the food in your fridge and freezers will cost a lot to replace.

If you own a business, how much income is lost over a few days of being without power? Especially if you have a restaurant or food store.

However, no matter how you get your power, you will always need a generator of some kind, to have uninterrupted electrical power.

I had a friend who used to say “peace of mind is cheap”. I always remember that when I consider buying something expensive, and contemplate the expense of:

Worry, maintaining a risky situation
The expense of loss when not insured (by a policy or in this case, a generator)

10 Best Owl Boxes to keep rodents out – garden saved! 2021

I did not know barn owls will keep rodents out – garden guards for all?

I heard on a recent radio show about why it is the better thing to add a barn owl box to your property (barn, house, tree, pole) rather than use rodent killer.

The rodent killer is a blood thinner. It will kill the rodent and also any other creature that eats it. A slow terrible death,.

Instead of disrupting the ecosystem in our neighborhoods, we can improve it. By placing barn owl boxes in strategic places, we can help the owls.

We can also get rid of mice, rats, gophers, moles and voles in our beautiful gardens and back yards.

Most of the owl boxes are heavy. Many customers have mentioned that they built an extra support under their house, or used larger screws to mount it.

One – JCs Wildlife Barn Owl Nesting House

Owl expert, Steve Simmons, created this design.

Predator guards are built in, to keep the owlets safe.

It comes with a hanging strip to facilitate installation. If you view this on Amazon (click on the image above), you will see that a small wooden support is also used. (not included).

“There are various designs of Owl Box on the market suitable for different sites. Young Owls or Owlets often fall out of a nest when they first start venturing outside; therefore it is important for the nesting site within the box to be below the level of the entrance hole.

Although there are some designs that are on the same level which are fine if they are sited correctly in the branches of a tree. If a box is mounted on a pole then a design with a shelf that runs around the box can be used for the owlets to fall onto or to exercise on.

Tawny Owl Boxes are often designed in the form of long rectangular tubes, which are placed under the branch of a tree often at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. This simulates the natural holes that Tawny Owls like to nest in.

The design of a nesting box for a little owl is not so important as they tend to nest in a variety of places and boxes. The main thing to note is that the entrance hole should be quite small (approximately 70mm diameter).

Owl Nest Boxes should be sited in an area sheltered from the elements and generally away from too much activity or habitation. One of the most important considerations for siting any nesting box is to be aware of the habitat that attracts the owls’ prey.

Typically, owls feed on small voles, mice and other rodents. These small creatures prefer tussocky grass fields to hide in. The grass needs to be quite tall with a deep litter layer.

In fact, creating the habitat can be more important than providing a nest box, as large amounts of prey will attract owls to the area and encourage breeding.

It is a good idea not to place a nesting box too near a main road as cars kill a lot of owls every year.”

Please note that these barn owl nesting boxes need to be cleaned out when the babies have grown. Keep that in mind when you install it.

Barred owls also prey on rodents – but they also eat small mammals.

If you buy one of these, remember to bring your cats and small dogs in at night!

These owls will opt for forests and open woodlands, but some have appeared in suburbs.

This box gets good reviews. Inevitably, there is one unhappy review because the mounting hardware did not arrive with the box.

You will get a fast response if this happens to you, and the pieces will arrive.

I am constantly shaking my head when I see reviews like that. Vendors with the three stars and up product reviews will jump fast to keep you happy!
